Ms. Josephine Merritt was born in the early afternoon on October 20, 1949 to the late Mr. Hope Merritt, Sr. and the late Mrs. Irene West Merritt the fourth of six children and the first daughter.

Her father was so enchanted by her beauty and curly doll like hair that as he lifted her blanket to show her to his friends, Josephine caught a cold by 10 p.m. on the night of her birth. In her early years, Josephine was affectionately known as “Sister” by her family, but was she later referred to as “Jo” and “Jo-Phine” by family and close friends as well as “Aunt Phine” by her loving and beloved nieces and nephews.

Josephine joined Union Tabernacle Baptist Church at an early age. She attended Sumter County Public Schools, graduating from Sumter High in 1967. Soon after graduation, Josephine moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where she worked for Rich's Department Store and People’s Supermarket. Always excelling in mathematics, she received an Associate Degree in Accounting from South Georgia Technical College. In 1981, Josephine moved back to Americus and worked at Cooper Lighting (then Metulax) for over 30 years. Active at Union Tabernacle and in the community, she worked on the finance committee and as an Exaltation Team Leader. She also served on the finance committee with the Americus-Sumter County Movement-Remembered Committee.
