Mrs. Mattie Mae Alford Banks, affectionately called Grandma Mat and Our Queen, was born in Desoto, Sumter County, Georgia on March 21, 1935 to the parentage of the late Mr. John Alford and the late Mrs. Donnie Hunt Alford. She received her education in the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age, she joined the New Saint Paul Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. E. L. Clark. She was employed by Dr. Jim Dudley for many years. In March of 1949, she met and later married Mr. George Banks and to their union of 69 years they were blessed with nine children. Her only son, George Banks, Jr. and a daughter, Carolyn Banks Snipes precedes her in death.


           Left to cherish her memories; her husband, Mr. George Banks, Sr., Americus, GA; seven daughters, Ms. Mattie Waters, Mrs. Donna (Cleveland) Williams, Ms. Georgia Tyner, Ms. Mary Ann Banks, Ms. Nancy Bruce, Mrs. Betty (James) Garrett all of Americus, GA and Mrs. Bobbie (Jerome) Waymon, Aliquippa, PA; two loving sister, Ms. Bertha Johnson, Boynton Beach, FL and Ms. Lula Bell Harvey, Aliquippa, PA; one loving sister-in-law, Ms. Willie Bell Jones, Americus, GA; three sons-in-law, Mr. Calvin Snipes, Mr. Eddie Williams and Mr. Robert Thomas all of Americus, GA; she was surrounded by the love of her devoted grandchildren, Bernita, Matthew, Polly Teresa, Bernard, Victoria, Makeel, Malcolm, Travis, Lanquon, Anthonio, Syreka, Jermaine, Denorrios, Kendrick, Steven, Danny, Kenneth, James, Derek and Ashley; 31 great grandchildren; four great, great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends, including 3 devoted friends, Ms. Mattie Waters, Americus, GA, Ms. Carrie Durham, Columbus, GA and Mr. Lawrence Brown, Bridgeton, NJ also survive.
